Exploring Recife: São José

Today we headed out to Recife's historic center to check out the Mercado São José and the surrounding areas. The market was very rustic and was definitely targeted at locals more so than tourists. It was mostly seafood and produce and a few arts and crafts. We wandered through the market and past a few churches on our way over to lunch at Leite. It lived up to its reputation as one of the best restaurants in town. It was super-fancy with tuxedoed waiters and live piano music, plush curtains and white linen table clothes. We were VERY under-dressed in sweaty tank tops and shorts, but they were very nice to us anyway! After lunch, we browsed through the Casa da Cultura to pick up some souvenirs! We wound up the night with a rather questionable dinner at Guaiamum Gigante that included some "delicious" fried tilapia skin salad! YUM-O!

Entrance to the market, seafood sales floor, arts & crafts, outdoor produce market

Kaali, Eric & Kylie!

Some local delicacies:  Charque & bacalhao, chicken's feet, hearts and parts, unrefrigerated meat dangling from hooks and a taxidermied goat that dispensed liquor out of its behind (in two convenient sizes)!
Que charming!

Basilica de Nossa Senhora de Penha

 The best paint job ever!

Pátio de São Pedro

Lunch at Leite! Que fancy!

 More fun with cut-outs!

Special thanks to Autumn for working so hard today while we were all out having fun!

Beach Day

After our exiting trip out of the city yesterday, we stayed in town and headed down to the beach today. In addition to receiving the remainder of our belongings on the day the Kaali and Alison arrived, we also received a huge shipment from Amazon.com full of baby stuff, including one baby life jacket!!

 Ready to float!

 Perfect day for the beach!

 Relaxing in the shade!
(as us brancos are supposed to do!)

 Kylie bobbing along!

 Whee!

Greetings from Recife!

Fort Orange

After checking out the manatees, we headed over to Fort Orange, which was literally right next door. It was an old Dutch fort that was built in 1631! Que interesante!

 Bem vindo ao Forte Orange!

 Oooh! Fort-y!

Look! Holes from which to smite thy enemies!

Or to make a call!

 Arches!

I wouldn't want to be that guy!
His job appeared to be to dig up / kill that pesky grass!

 None shall pass!

Prepare to eat cannon ball you dastardly beach party boats! FIRE!

DANGER!

Ready for action!

Alison:  "I wonder what these are? I guess I'll just eat it!"
Us:  "Noooooo!"
Random Local:  "It's just an olive guys! Relax!"

 An agave! Let's make tequila!

Another weird tropical flower!

Peek-a-boo!

Visit with Kaali & Alison!

Two of our high school friends came down to visit this week for Spring Break! We love having visitors since it actually makes us go out and explore the area. First stop on our itinerary:  Itamaracá to visit the manatee preserve (better known as the Instituto Chico Mendes de Concervaçâo da Biodiversidade - Centro Nacional de Concervaçâo e Manejo de Sirêneos ou Peixe-Boi) and Fort Orange. The drive was a little harrowing, as usual, but we made it there and back in one piece!

Off to an early start with a fully fed baby!

It's a Manatee Movie Theater!

Time to feed K again! Cheese!

 Don't climb the fish!

 Hibiscus!

 Hello mana-friends!

I want to come live in your bathtub Alison!

Checking out the manatees from below!

 Cheese!

Alison was very excited about the manatees!

It Came! It Came!!

Today was a great and magical day.  Our household effects have finally arrived.  !!  Almost exactly a year to the day from our emergency pack out of Mexico City, our stuff is once again in our presence.  It is a great thing.  To all those who would scoff and say, "I don't need my stuff!  People are way too materialistic!," followed by an eye roll, I challenge you to try it for a year.  :)

Glorious boxes...

I spy with my little eye two things that were made in Mexico (hint: one of them is a pot!).  :)

Baby Food!

Trying to get Kylie to eat solids is an emotional roller coaster these days!

Haha! This is fun!

What!?!? Stop! I can't take it any more!

 Just let me do that!

Aren't I cute?

They're ALMOST donuts!

Here is one reason to love Recife! They have a pão doce that is almost like a real American doughnut! Sunday breakfast has been saved!

They come in jelly and creme filled!
Sprinkles and nuts and frosting! Oh my!

According to the package this one is a "Bread Easter Chocolate Special"!
I just call it a donut-zão!
